What happens when we die?

Admittedly, I'm a couple years late to the whole Love Wins broohaha, but having just preached Luke 16:19-31 I thought I'd share what the bible says.

1. YOUR BODY DIES

2a. IF YOU'VE SUBMITTED TO THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS OF THE BIBLE YOUR SOUL IS IMMEDIATELY WITH JESUS IN HEAVEN

  • Luke 16:22; 23:43
  • John 3:36
  • Philippians 1:23
  • 2 Corinthians 5:8

2B. IF YOU DENY CHRIST YOUR SOUL IS IMMEDIATELY SENT TO HELL FOREVER

  • Luke 16:22-23
  • Job 18:14
  • Mark 9:43-48
  • John 3:36
  • 1 Corinthians 15:26
  • Revelation 20

3. JESUS RETURNS

  • Matthew 24:36
  • Mark 13:32-33
  • John 14:2-3
  • 1 Corinthians 15:52

4. THE BODIES OF THE DEAD ARE RESURRECTED

  • Daniel 12:2
  • Matthew 22:23
  • John 5:28-29
  • Acts 17:31
  • 2 Timothy 2:18
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:16

5. CHRISTIANS ARE GIVEN BETTER BODIES & LIVE FOREVER IN THE NEW HEAVEN & NEW EARTH

  • 1 Corinthians 15:49;51-55
  • Philippians 3:20-1

We often believe other things about the afterlife that are not supported by scripture. For example...

GET YOUR WINGS? No, we do not turn into angels.

  • Matthew 22:30
  • Hebrews 12:22-23
  • Luke 20:34-36

PRAY TO SOMEONE WHO DIED? Bad idea.

  • Luke 16:27-31
  • Deuteronomy 18:10-11
  • Isaiah 8:19
  • Hebrews 4:14–16

HEAVEN "TOURISM"? Yeah, those bestsellers about trips to heaven and back are popular, but are they biblical?

  • John 3:13
  • Luke 16:27-31
  • Proverbs 30:4

SECOND CHANCES? Can't we change our minds or maybe have our family pray us out of "limbo"?

  • Luke 16:19-31
  • John 8:24
  • Acts 13:46
  • Hebrews 9:27

HEAVEN OBSESSION? We spend a lot of our time looking toward heaven instead of living for Christ in the here and now. It's like we've missed the fact that we weren't even supposed to be in heaven but on earth! The Genesis account of the garden shows that death was never God's desire but the fruit of our action: sin.

HEAVEN IS NOT THE GOAL. Jesus is. "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21)" We want to go right to the second part of gaining eternal life but let's not's miss the first part.
We don't come to Jesus to get his "get out of death" benefit (though it is an amazing benefit we gain from His work). We come to Jesus to get Jesus. And when we get Jesus we get new life. He didn't come to live and die to offer us a better way to die. He came to give us a better way to live!

WE'RE SAVED FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD. Christ desires for us to be the awesome He wants to see in the world: to point everyone to Him, to love the unloved, to right the wrongs, to feed the hungry, and to care for the orphan and the widow. His Spirit within us can redeem our everyday lives and the work of our hands so that it too glorifies Him.

There is nothing wrong with looking forward seeing Him face to face, of being reunitied with all our loved ones who preceeded us into glory and to asking Abe Lincoln all the questions you can imagine. But don't miss this: Jesus offers us a better way to live. A new way to be human. He's the point--not heaven. But the heaven part is pretty cool too.
